The FAREWELL SJDT

The 42nd St. James' Day Tripper - the FAREWELL SJDT was steam hauled and picked up Preston, Bamber Bridge, Cherry Tree, Blackburn, Rishton, Accrington, and Burnley, Rose Grove on outward journey. Our photograph here shows 48151 climbing Copy Pit on the homeward journey.

The Story

Circumstances had brought us to this point. Filling, no making a profit from our usual diesel-hauled SJDTs was becoming difficult. Raising funds for worthy causes can be done in less stressful ways such as organised holidays, weekend breaks and other social activities. The market isn't there for the SJDT to make a meaningful profit.

So let's finish running charter trains. How do we go out in style? Run a steam-hauled last SJDT. And that's exactly what we did. Isn't it ironic that this last-ever SJDT filled mainly by word of mouth with little advertising and made a significant profit.

Bookings for the train opened in June and some Day Trippers beat the rush booking and paying online. Others by downloading our booking form from this site.

The weather was glorious for late September and the run to York was punctuated by a stop for water at Brighouse. The locomotive needed water and so too did the catering staff. Members of the Service Crew were dispatched to find drinking water. Where better than the local Public House which duly supplied some. When the landlord and lady found out there was a steam train sitting in their station they disappeared as fast as any cartoon character you could mention.

York is always a good day to spend some leisure time especially in glorious sunshine.

The return journey was a spirited run with the highlight being the climb up Copy Pit. Steam trains bring out lots of on-lookers at the best of times but witnessing a steam locomotive working hard climbing a hill is always a joy. There were so many people watching us surmount Copy Pit everyone on board must have thought they were royalty.

The FAREWELL SJDT was indeed a trip to remember for years to come.

Thanks to all who help make the day a real success.

The SJDT charters will surely be missed by a number of people across the region if not the whole country.

THANKS AGAIN
