George & Merle Grunshaw

George & Merle Grunshaw

Artistic set

Part of the initial set up, the Grunshaws assisted in numerous ways. George was famous for his early advertising posters and on-train destination posters. These are now very sought after on eBay.

Daughters help too

Alison and Janine have both been members of the Service Crew through their adolescence. Both of the girls in their turn baby sat for near neighbours the Bonds and it was partly through this relationship that George became "Uncle George" to Duncan & Laura Bond.

In later times the girls "guested" when they could. Alison had the shift pattern her nursing demanded whilst Janine resided in N. Ireland. Getting home for Janine was difficult and at one time the idea of running a SJDT over there was mooted.

Responsibilities George was responsible for looking after the welfare of the trolley dollies by being at the controls of one of them. Boiling water very early in the morning was another of George's responsibilities.

Merle looked after the acquisition of pies and on board as a trolley dolly looking after at-seat refreshment provision.
