Our FIRST Steam Day Tripper

The 36th St. James' Day Tripper was steam hauled and picked up Preston, Bamber Bridge, Cherry Tree, Blackburn, Rishton, Accrington, and Burnley, Rose Grove on outward journey. Our photograph here shows 48151 on arrival at Blackburn on a glorious Spring morning.

The Story

This was our first-ever venture into steam haulage and came about because of a number of circumstances.

Our proud headboard

  1. We are always looking for something different that will keep our regular Day Trippers' interest
  2. We hire our coaching stock from West Coast Railway Company at Carnforth.
  3. The owner, David Smith, also owns a steam locomotive which is kept at Carnforth.
  4. We have been concerned about costs for the hire of a steam locomotive but when the coaching stock and locomotive live with each other the are minimised
  5. We could offer an interesting journey and steam haulage at reasonable cost

And so we ran a steam Day Tripper.

Bookings for the train were opened on 15 January 2003 some passengers having beaten this by downloading our booking form from this site.

All tickets were sold by the end of February with some regulars not able to ride with us due to the unprecedented demand.

In late April the independent radio station Rock FM and their sister station Magic 999 held a charity auction for a day proceeds going to their charity - Help a Local Child. Eric heard of the auction and convinced Ian to squeeze 2 more passengers into the Buffet Car by donating 2 tickets to the auction.

Francis McCaffery paid £100 for these very last tickets so that his father-in-law, Brian Fare of Wesham, could ride behind a steam locomotive as a birthday treat. Brian worked on the railways in steam days. Our picture shows Brian and his wife in the seats on the outward journey.

Sue Shackleton from Darwen won the first prize in Super Draw 6. Our picture shows Eric the Raffle presenting the £100 cash prize

Eric the Raffle presents the second prize of £50 cash to the lucky winner.
